Why the Phaseout?
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) also are ozone-depleting substances used extensively in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment manufactured and installed today. The most common HCFC refrigerant is R-22. In response to these environmental concerns, no new or imported R-22 will be allowed in the U.S. on or after Jan. 1, 2020.
2017 Brings Significant Changes to Refrigerant
Per the phaseout schedule, production and importation of HCFC-22 will be 13 million pounds in 2017, 9 million pounds in 2018, and 4 million pounds in 2019. To you, this means prepare for a significant decrease in R-22 supply. As the R-22 supply continues to decrease, the price will increase.
However, as R-22 supply decreases, it is also being recycled by certified refrigerant reclaimers. These reclaimers will make a limited supply of recycled R-22 available after the phaseout.
Recycled R-22 will still meet AHRI specifications and will equal newly manufactured refrigerant.
We’re here to help you stay informed of current EPA requirements. While you are not legally required to stop using R-22, you can replace your existing system with one that uses a safer refrigerant.
