The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have established guidelines requiring heightened efficiency for residential refrigerators and freezers.

Both the DOE's requirements and the EPA's ENERGY STAR® version 5 specifications took effect on September 15, 2014. These regulations require that new refrigerators and freezers use less energy than older models.

What the Energy Efficiency Specifications Mean for Your Customers

• By replacing an older refrigerator or freezer with the new energy-efficient or ENERGY STAR-compliant model, your customers will conserve energy and save money on their utility bills for years to come.
• The difference in energy usage comes from a combination of improved insulation, heightened compressor efficiency, enhanced heat exchange, highly efficient fans and motors and superior temperature control.
• ENERGY STAR version 5 certification encourages optional connected criteria, including the ability to communicate with a home control system, as well as local utility and energy-saving smart features like alerts that notify users when the door has been left open.

Why Convert to the New Refrigerators and Freezers?

• If all refrigerators and freezers sold in the U.S. met these new requirements, the energy cost savings would be more than $890 million each year.
• 11.8 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the emissions of more than one million vehicles, would be prevented if all refrigerators and freezers sold in the U.S. met these specifications.
